In the world of idioms

Today's entry is going to be different. Here is a list of idiomatic expressions that can uplevel your writing:

out of the blue = suddenly => nagle, niespodziewanie

It happened out of the blue. 
Out of the blue, the dog appeared.

It's not my cup of tea. = I'm not interested in something, I don't like (doing) it.

Reading novels is not my cup of tea.

It's a piece of cake. = It's easy. => Łatwizna, bułka z masłem.

a stone's throw ( from some place) = a very short distance, not far (from some place) = rzut beretem

My school is a stone's throw from my house.

I wasn't born yesterday. = I'm not naive. I understand your motives, and I don't like that. => Nie jestem głupi, nie dam się nabrać.

It's raining cats and dogs. = Its raining heavily. => Leje jak z cebra.

a backseat driver = a passenger in a car who comments on and/or crticizes the driver 

to see red = to become very angry => zezłościć się

I saw red when they didn't come to the theatre on time.

Can you give me a hand? = Can you help me?

I lost my mind. = I couldn't think logically, usually in connection with love, other strong emotion, a stressful situation, etc. Or, when we do something that is not our normal behaviour, and we don't know why. => Straciłem rozum / straciłem głowę.

a bookworm = someone who loves reading / who reads a lot

Practice makes perfect = Praktyka czyni mistrza.

I have / he has a sweet tooth = I like / he likes eating sweets = Ja lubię / on lubi słodycze. (Dosłownie: mam słodki ząb ;))

Are you pulling my leg? = Are you joking? => Żartujesz sobie?

for a song = for free => za darmo
I got the icecream for a song.

Talking to a Fox

If a non-human being appears in your story, you may want to know some things about it.  Let's say one of your story characters is a fox. Here's a list of questions to consider: 1. Where does the fox come from? 2. Where does it live? 3. Does it live alone or with other foxes? Or with someone else? 4. What is good about this animal? What's not so good? 5. What does it need? What does it want? 6. What does it love, like, enjoy? What does it dislike? 7. Did something happen in the past? Does the fox have a secret? 7. What role does the fox play in the story?  8. Is it dangerous? 9. Does it have a message to you? I hope you'll enjoy answering tbe questions. Good luck!
